InterLibrary Loan

Plainfield Public Library patrons may request items not owned by a Pinnacle library through a service called Interlibrary Loan. The Library participates in ILLINET, the statewide interlibrary loan network, and OCLC, a worldwide interlibrary loan network.

Interlibrary Loan Policy
(as excerpted from Section 3 of the Library Services Policy)

Interlibrary Loan is a primary service that supports the mission of the Library by providing enhanced access to library materials and information. The purpose of Interlibrary Loan is to obtain materials not available in our Library from other libraries and to provide materials from our collections to other libraries.

Material not available within the Plainfield Public Library District consortium catalog may be obtained through interlibrary loan. Materials borrowed through interlibrary loan have a circulation period which is determined by the lending library.

The library affirms that Interlibrary Loan is a supplement, not a substitute for the Library’s collections. In meeting patron needs, the Library will exhaust local resources first through our shared catalog before requesting items through out-of-system Interlibrary Loan. Out-of-system Interlibrary Loans are items that must be requested from libraries outside of our shared catalog. As a member of ILLINET, the Library follows the ILLINET and American Library Association Interlibrary Loan Codes.

Interlibrary Loan is a service available to all Plainfield Public Library District cardholders, non-resident cardholders and reciprocal borrowers, as long as the patron is in good standing (i.e., no delinquent charges or overdue items).

A. Fines and Fees - There is no fee to request an item on Interlibrary Loan (ILL). The Library will make every effort to obtain an item from a non-charging lender, but sometimes an item is only available from a lending library that charges fees. If that is the case, the Library will notify the patron to determine whether the patron would still like to obtain the item and pay the subsequent fee.

B. Borrowing - The lending library determines the loan period, which can vary from 2-4 weeks. Items on out-of-system Interlibrary Loan may only be renewed once, provided the lending library allows renewals. Requests for renewals must be made three (3) business days before the item’s due date or they will not be able to be processed.

C. Lending - Plainfield Public Library District will lend materials in any format except newspapers, microfilms, genealogy, local history and rare books. The Library will accept requests via mail, fax, telephone and e-mail. All photocopy requests must be in writing indicating copyright compliance. The Plainfield Public Library District reserves the right to refuse to lend materials or to ask a borrowing library to restrict use of materials lent.

D. Guidelines - The Library will attempt to borrow most requested materials as long as they are available in the continental United States. Patrons are cautioned, however, that certain types of materials may not be available for ILL from the owning library. These include: current bestsellers, reference materials, genealogy, rare books and audio-visual materials (such as videos, DVDs or audiobooks).

  1. Items that have been published within the last twelve months or are repeatedly requested will be considered for purchase.
  2. The Library will comply with Copyright Law (17 U.S.C.) as it applies to Interlibrary Loan photocopy requests of periodical articles.
  3. All requests are to be made with the Reference and Readers Services Department, either in-person, by phone or via email.
  4. Out-of-system Interlibrary Loan requests are limited to seven (7) requests at any one time.
  5. Out-of-system ILLs require more time to process and will take longer to obtain as the items can come from anywhere in the United States.
